Recycling Evidence

What does diverted from landfill mean, and how do you calculate a diversion rate?

Short answer: A diversion rate is the share of your waste that was recycled or reused instead of going to landfill, calculated by dividing the weight diverted by the total weight of waste produced and multiplying by one hundred, so to use it honestly you need reliable weights for both the diverted material and the total waste, and you should say how you measured them.

The basic formula

Divide the weight of material recycled or reused by the total weight of waste generated, then multiply by one hundred to get a percentage.

Why both numbers matter

A strong diversion figure needs trustworthy weights for the diverted stream and for everything else, including general waste.

Be open about the method

A short note on how the figure was calculated makes the number credible and helps someone else repeat it.

How ScrapTrade Fits In

ScrapTrade gives you documented weights for the scrap stream, which is one of the more reliable parts of a diversion calculation.

Good evidence starts with the sale. ScrapTrade records the material, weight, buyer and payment of each trade, with verified buyers and escrow-protected payments.
